A Poker Social Experiment

Same Site, New Beginning

You might have remembered it; a couple of years ago I started this poker blog. It was meant to be this grandiose thing with sage poker advice and a flashy look. I was going to impart my pearls of wisdom onto the un-illuminated masses here to bask in my poker glory. It stayed afloat for a few months and I think even encountered a regular reader or two.

Then I got stressed at the prospect of having to come up with original content that mattered on a regular basis. Additionally, I just wasn’t that wise or great at the game. That isn’t to say I had nothing to offer, but poker pro / zen master I was not. The blog fell into neglect, and eventually was even infected with some sort of WordPress virus. So I removed the site and didn’t do anything with it … until now.

I have now found a use for it. Something where I don’t have to impress a readership (although, what blogger wouldn’t want a throng of thousands checking their RSS feeds for your next textual morsel?), I don’t have to make up content on a regular basis, and where hopefully WordPress viruses no longer roam. I have decided to try my hand at becoming a semi-pro poker player, and this site will be the place I rehash for myself what happened at each session, where my bankroll and running wins / losses can be tracked, and my proud and low moments are on display for all to read. Hopefully the readership (if there ever is one) will find some useful articles, or perhaps someone to commiserate losses over.

Now this idea of becoming a semi-pro poker player is a loaded term and probably conjurers lots of images of the world series and what a big poser I just made myself sound like. I use the term, only because I think it is technically correct to use it and it is somewhat less of a mouthful than i-want-to-play-poker-to-supplement-my-income-but-never-really-expect-to-do-this-for-a-living. So here is my goal: To work my bankroll up to four thousand playing mostly 1/2 no limit. Any amount over the four thousand goes to paying off credit cards, utilities, and household bills of various flavors. That, by definition would be a semi-pro poker player. Someone who uses his or her poker winnings to help them make ends meet. If I can do it, it will be like taking on a part-time job where I control my hours and I can call in sick or disinterested whenever I want. If I can’t do it, you will get to “watch it” here where I will crash and burn for your morbid entertainment.

So let me set the expectations: I live in central Illinois where our local casino has just started hosting poker tables by pushing over some slot machines and cramming the poker players into a small corner where only the dedicated poker enthusiasts would have the energy or interest to find it. It is a twenty minute drive from my house and prior to this new offering by the casino, the closest legal poker table was about an hour-and-a-half away. So, this new attraction now makes my goal possible or my addiction complete. I will document each session here, my thoughts my views and my criticisms on my play. I will also update in dollar amounts my current bankroll and win / loss ratio. It will be the great poker social experiment (or so I would hope).

I hope to see lots of comments both positive and negative. I want both kudos and constructive criticism. I seek to get better at this game and re-read my postings here as a way to self examine my play and state of mind.

  • How do you play KQs from the cutoff behind two limpers?

You know I’ll be a loyal reader, but that’s just because I’m looking for an edge to exploit. ;-)

  • I hate KQ, but that is for a later post. :P

Look for that edge all you want. I don’t think we hide too much from each other, and besides, the dynamic has changed. We play less against each other now, and more against people we don’t really know.

Think of this as a team effort. :P

  • Not exactly playing as a team - no colluding - but I agree. We tend to play less against each other and more like two circling dolphins picking mackerel off the same bait ball.
